The Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) has written to all leading dairy product companies to ensure that customers do not bear the brunt of milk being overcharged for. The LMO said that private parties that are given an allotment for the distribution of milk have their own sub-distributors and vendors, who charge an extra amount at each level. The customers were thus being charged Rs2 to Rs4 extra per litre under the garb of cooling or transportation charges. The organisation has now requested these companies to make a declaration in their advertisements that the product includes transportation and cooling charges.

According to the controller of LMO, Amitabh Gupta, the organisation has been receiving complaints that the distributors or vendors have been charging Rs2 to Rs4 extra per litre on milk packets from the consumers on the pretext of transportation and cooling charges. LMO is entrusted with the task of ensuring shopkeepers and vendors do not charge more than MRP printed on the packaged products.

“It is the responsibility of milk producers to make efforts to ensure the consumer gets the milk supplied by them at MRP. We have instructed all milk producers to print the declaration stating MRP includes transportation and cooling charges on the milk packets. They have been asked to ensure consumers are not fleeced and have also been advised to address the issue of overcharging in the name of transportation and cooling prices in their advertisements,” said Gupta.

He added, the dairy companies that have been sent the instructions include Mahananda dairy, Amul dairy, Vardhaman dairy, Aarey dairy and Gokul dairy among others. “If the companies fail to comply then action will be taken as per the provisions in the Legal Metrology Act,” he said.

“Sub-distributors and vendors resort to charging as per their whim and fancy as they are not responsible to anyone. Most of the milk, at present, is sold on the road side which itself is in contravention of rules and regulations,” said another LMO official.
