Contractor arrested after 3 die in Mankhurd toilet collapse

The toilet served over 5,000 people.

The Mankhurd Police on Friday arrested a contractor, Rajdev Ramnaresh Bharti (52), after the collapse of a portion of a public toilet killed three persons and injured some others.

According to police, the mishap took place at around 8.13 am in the Indira Nagar area when the toilet was almost full. and people were queued up since 6 am. Suddenly, one of the slabs they were standing on collapsed, taking them down into a drainage tank where they drowned.  “The toilet is built on a drainage tank and there was a huge rush early morning to use the loo. One portion caved in and three people who were standing on the slab fell into the drainage tank,” said Naresh Kasale, Senior Inspector of Police from Mankhurd police station.

The toilet served over 5,000 people leaving in nearby slums.The deceased have been identified as Harish Bipin Tikekar (40), Ganesh Rambhajan Shahsoni (40) and Mohd. Israsila Shabir Ansari  (30).

"We have arrested the accused in the case after Rahimunnissa Shaikh(63) registered the complaint. We are investigating the matter" Kasle said

The police have booked the contractor and few others under sections 304 (for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Indian Penal Code.
