The Bombay High Court on Monday directed the District Collector of Sindhudurg to verify the claim made by two locals about gold and platinum being found in mines of iron ore at two sites in the district.

A division bench of Justice Naresh Patil and Justice V L Achliya directed the officer in charge to seal the site if it is found that the claim is correct.

The two petitioners R S Hazare and Nandkumar Pawar claimed in their petition that there is "illegal excavation and export of gold which is present in the iron ore mined from Redi, Sateli, Tiroda and Kalane villages. The mining of precious and noble metals is being carried out rampantly as if it was ordinary iron ore."

Further the petition filed through Advocate Zaman Ali states that though several surveys and analyses have shown on several occasions the presence of gold particles in the said iron ore, and though this fact has been conveyed to authorities, no action has been taken. This is causing huge losses to the state exchequer.

The petition prays for directions to authorities to prohibit mining of iron ore from these areas of Sindhudurg till analysis of the iron ore for presence of gold and platinum is carried out. The petition also asks that a committee be set up for investigating and carrying out analysis of iron ore for the presence of gold and platinum unit quantities in the iron ore of Redi, Sateli, Tiroda and Kalane mines. The court has directed the government to file its reply on the petition by May 7.
