Mumbaikars can heave a sigh of relief as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) will not hike bus fares next year. Instead, it will make technical changes in their buses and depot systems to reduce maintenance expenditures.

According to the budget proposal submitted by the BEST administration on Friday to the standing committee, major and minor technical modifications that are being done on an experimental basis will be extended to save costs.

Soon, a revamped mobile application too would be launched by the BEST. It is also looking forward to funds from the Central government as part of the 'Smart City' to have Passenger Information System at the bus stops.

Santacruz and Majas Bus depot would be re-modelled on priority basis, on lines of Kurla Bus Depot as they are in a dilapidated condition. It would take three years to revamp these two bus depots. A sum of Rs100 crore would be spent over a period of three years.
