Beef ban likely to affect Maharashtra's agrarian economy

The decision of the BJP-Sena government to ban on slaughter of bulls and oxen may adversely affect the agrarian economy in the state.

Since the move will not allow farmers to sell aging and unproductive bovines to butchers, the owners will find it increasingly difficult to buy new livestock as well as maintain the old lot.

"The ban will force us to keep the old animals with us till their death. This means an additional monthly expense of Rs6,000 per animal. If the government is so concerned about cows and bulls, it should give us the money. We too love our animals, but one has to be practical," said Ashok Jadhav, a farmer from Dhule and owner of 27 cows.

Jalgaon resident Rajesh Wankhede said it was time the government focussed on bigger issues on its plate. "Unseasonal rains destroyed our crops three months ago and we have been awaiting compensation since then. When we are struggling to feed our family members, how can we feed old bulls and cows?"

Getting rid of infirm animals and acquiring new ones is a cycle that needs to be maintained, said agriculture expert Ranjeet Shinde. "Farmers will now abandon old animals at faraway places where they may die. The move is bound to cause many problems."

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said prohibition on slaughter of cows, bulls and oxen will lead to rise in demand for other meat products and send their prices northward. "I don't understand why the government is meddling with the people's food habits. Let them eat what they like. Here, the biggest loser is the farmer."
