Sunday was a celebration day for Rishi Agarwal from Parel in Mumbai as he emerged as the state topper at the coveted Joint Entrance Examinations for admissions to IITs and top engineering institutes in the country.

With an All India Rank 8, Agarwal made it to the list of top ten students at the examinations the results of which were declared on Sunday. "While I was expecting a good score, a single-digit rank comes as a pleasant surprise. I can only say that I tried to give my best. My papers went well and I was very happy while studying and writing the exam with no stress on me."

Preparing for the exams was a smooth journey and his life didn't change much, said Rishi, whose father is an investment banker and mother a housewife. "I would use my phone and watch TV in between my study hours."

Andheri boy Rishi scored 96.47% in his Class XII board exams. "I studied for around 12-13 hours as the exam was nearing," he said. He wants to take up Computer Science at IIT-Bombay.

At number three, the IIT-Bombay zone came one position down from that of 2017, with 2,936 students making the cut as opposed to 9,893 students last year. With only one student making it to top 10 and sixteen to top 100, the performance of the zone seems to have seen an overall dip. Despite the poor performance, most students who made it to the top 10 said they are keen to study at IIT-B with Computer Science as their top preference.

AIR rank 12 Abhinav Kumar said, "Consistent preparation helped me achieve the feat."

"I always wanted to study at IIT-B and am happy that I can get Computer Science with my current score," said Anuj Srivastava of Pune who scored an All India Rank 25.
