The Meghwadi police have arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting his daughters after their mother passed away 10 months ago. The girls are aged 22, 18 and 16 — the eldest is a third-year medical student, the middle an HSC passout and the youngest is in Std XII.

In her police complaint, the eldest daughter said her father used to beat her and her sisters and would regularly touch them inappropriately. She added that he had married a younger woman and they, along with her father's two friends, would regularly ill-treat the three girls.

The accused would allegedly deny them meals, and he and his friends would threaten to sell them off for prostitution or morph their photos and sell them as porn. The girls said they had approached the police a number of times, but the officers always recorded only a non-cognisable offence.

"Whenever my father was called to the police station, he would tell the cops that we are fighting over a property and, hence, making false allegations against him," said the eldest daughter. "We were so fed up of the harassment that we were contemplating suicide. My father and his friends threatened to kill us as well many times."

Senior inspector Santosh Bhandare said, "We have arrested the father after the girls complained, we are looking for the other two accused. We will investigate thoroughly and take all steps to ensure the girls are safe."

The accused has been booked under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
