Aims to strengthen custom-publishing business

MUMBAI: CyberMedia, the publisher of magazines like Dataquest and PCQuest, has acquired US-based TDA Group Inc with the aim of creating a larger footprint in custom publishing.

This is Cybermedia’s second acquisition in the US in the past 16 months. In December 2006, it acquired Illinois-based Publication Services Inc, which helped it strengthen its content-outsourcing business.

California-based TDA Group provides custom-publishing services to major IT companies in the US, in areas like marketing, consulting, content development, web and graphic design. The company’s products include both print and online offerings like magazines, newsletters, customer reference programmes, white papers, direct mail and websites.

The deal enables all TDA Group’s multinational IT clients to take their custom-based publications to India. It posted revenues exceeding $5 million in the year ended December 2007.

The new entity, TDA Group LLC, will retail all the 30 full-time employees apart from about 15 freelancers. Founders Bob Tabke and Debbie Dawson will participate as consultants in business activities.

Pradeep Gupta, chairman, CyberMedia, said: “Bringing the TDA Group into the CyberMedia business portfolio is a strategic move in growing our content based services business rapidly. It takes our entire media services business to about $10 million.”

Analysts said the commercial publishing business in India is growing at 10-15%, of which B2B publications comprise some 40% and is showing promising growth. For Cyber Media, this acquisition not only means access to top-notch IT clients, but also allows itself to strengthen its presence in the US. “Through this, Cyber Media could look at smaller acquisitions in the US in the future. Indian IT companies after achieving a certain stability, would then also look to advertise in the resulting publications,” said Girish Swar, senior analyst, Anandrathi Financial services.

Cybermedia currently has over 580 employees and operates out of offices in Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune apart from offices in Singapore, UK and US. Now in its 25th year, the specialty media house has fifteen publications in the infotech, telecom, consumer electronics, biotech and entrepreneurship areas, and has interests in internet, events and TV.
