BSE, NSE tailspin; Sensex down 347 points

The BSE and National Stock Exchange (NSE) continued its weakness on Tuesday, after facing bloodshed in the last week. The government's move to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from the system and Donald Trump emerging as the President Elect, last week, hit markets hard.

BSE hit an intraday low of 26,321.01 and then recovered slightly to 26,501.68, down 317.14 points or 1.16% from previous close.

On Tuesday, the 30-share benchmark Sensex opened nearly flat, only 9.21 points or 0.03% lower at 26,809.61 from Friday's close. But the index soon shed the gains and was trading down 250.52 points and from there, it tailspinned to 26,479.19, down 339.63 points or 1.27% from previous close. 

Stock, commodity and money markets remained shut on Monday for Gurunanak Jayanti. 

The broader Nifty index was trading at 8,214.70, down 81.60 points or 0.98% then fell further to 8187.30, down 109.00 or 1.31% from Friday's close. 

In the Asian markets, a Reuters report said that the bourses remained on the back foot as the dollar touched an eleven-month peak. "MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was flat in early trades while Australian stocks were off 0.5%. US stocks consolidated recent gains with the Dow ending at a record high on Monday while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite dipped after choppy trading.. US stock futures were broadly flat in early trade," the report said. 

On the BSE, the top losers were, Manappuram Finance 13.79%, J K Lakshmi Cement 8.10%, Muthoot Finance 8.06%, Bharat Finance 7.67%, Escorts 7.47%. 

Intraday, markets will be tracking wholesale and retail inflation data slated to be announced later in the day.
