Rugs add a finishing touch to every home, being made to suit all home styles. They help add or reduce dimensions and create a completely new feel to the room.

For the kids
In the kids’ room, rugs are not only a floor accessory but also double up as an area for games and activities. Hence, the rug used must be tough, durable and of good quality.

Rug type: Hand-tufted rugs are by far the hardiest. They come in a variety of designs that suit children. Hand-tufting also adds an embossed effect, enhancing colours and characters on the rugs. From cartoon characters to alphabets, numbers and even board games, these rugs come in a variety of designs. While choosing a rug, do not stick to the conventional shapes like rectangles and circles, try and experiment with new ones.
Available at: Mother Earth, Koramangala 4th block.

Living space
Rugs for the living room depend largely on how you have designed the room. The right rug in the living room adds depth and character to the room. The right colour brings together all shades from the rest of the room.

Rugs in the dining room may not be a very good idea in homes with children. But, while choosing the rug, stay away from light colours.

Rug type:
If yours is a traditionally designed room with heavy, dark wood furniture, Oriental and Kashmiri rugs in warm colours go best. In a more modern set-up that uses steel, glass or light wood, hand-tufted, light and abstract designs can be used.

Available at: Jaipur Rugs’ online store. Look for the Fresco and Konstrukt collections.
In the bedroom

The best place for rugs at home is a bedroom. With the most minimal use, these rugs can be completely experimented with. These rugs can be put in front of the dressing table, go under the bed, or simply be another article in the room. Match the rug to your bedroom décor and feel. To add dimensions to the room, look for rugs with horizontal stripes; to create a more cosy appearance, choose darker colours.

Rug type: Shaggy rugs, in all colours and shapes suit the bedroom. Shags are available in polyester and wools. Go for cooler colours like blues and greens for an added soothing effect. Abstract designs with a third dimension will add an extra spunk.

Available at: Skipper Furnishings, Dickenson Road.
