The festival of Navratri means indulging in the dance form of dandiya and decking up in traditional attires. While fusing traditional with modern has been the order of the day for quite some time now, tattoo artists in the city say that the fad seems to have many more takers this season.

Tattoo artist Ruby Jiwani says that many youngsters want to make a style statement through a tattoo but are afraid to get a permanent one. At times like these, they opt for temporary ones.

“We use skin friendly Chinese dyes to form a base tattoo that lasts for about a week. It has to be filled in with poster colours on a daily basis,” says Ruby adding that one can also fill the tattoo with acrylic colours if they wish it to last a bit longer than water colours.

Tattoo artist Rahul Gaikwad says that the young want to experiment with the tattoos they sport during the festive season. “Tattoos of couples playing the garba and that of deities are in demand now,” he says.

The tattoos are economically priced as well. Ruby says a simple tattoo made using poster colours will cost about Rs500 onwards, whereas the base tattoo that involves the Chinese dyes will cost Rs1,000 onwards. “The base tattoo lasts for a week so it turns out to be pretty economical,” adds Ruby.

Designer Pria Kataria Puri says that the beauty of such designs can be highlighted with daring cuts and backless cholis. “A backless choli will only do justice to the tattoo on the back. A slit in the lehenga can sensually reveal a tattoo on the calf or thigh. Also, short cholis worn with transparent or no dupatta can highlight a tattoo around the navel,” says Pria.

While there are endless options as to where you can sport a tattoo, the ones crawling along the spine, on the side of the cheek, the upper arm, neck and entire back are the most sorted this season, says Rahul.
