It promises to be one mystical evening for all Sufi music lovers in the city as some of the most talented artistes present the works of Hazrat Amir Khusrau, one of the greatest Sufi poets. This veritable treat for music lovers will be presented by Banyan Tree at the Nehru Center Auditorium in Worli this evening. Some of the performers would be Chishti Brothers from Muradabad, Ustad Aslam Khan, Pt Vitthal Rao from Hyderabad, Shubha Joshi, Dilraj Kaur and Rafat Khan and his group.

Ustad Aslam Khan says, “Something like this, where an entire evening has been dedicated to Hazrat Amir Khusrau, has never happened in Mumbai. Hazrat Amir Khusrau was someone who always preached the message of peace and brotherhood.”
His views are echoed by Pt Vitthal Rao from Hyderabad who says, “Such events should encourage the younger generation to listen to more such talented artistes of the past.” He adds, “As a tribute to him, I’ll sing two of his Persian songs as he used to write a lot in Persian.”

The idea for the concert was born when Banyan Tree started researching on a music album on Hazrat Amir Khusrau. Nandini Mahesh, director, Banyan Tree, says, “After 14 months of intensive research we dug out a range of information on Hazrat Amir Khusrau. He had such a vast repertoire of poems. That’s when we planned a live event. We found a 99-year-old Ustad in Kolkata who knew some of Hazrat Amir Khusrau’s rare and extinct songs. Unfortunately we couldn’t have him in the concert because of his frail health.”

She’s also excited that a lot of young people have shown interest in the concert. “Off late, youngsters have developed a tremendous liking for Sufi music. This kind of curiosity can only be good for this music form,” she ends.
