Praveen Rawal, country manager, Steelcase India talks about office furniture and upcoming trends.

Q: Could you tell us about Steelcase’s technology based furniture? 
A: Technology is a key enabler to success. It boosts collaboration in offices by helping individuals and teams to work in a healthy conducive environment that is highly functional and efficient. The ‘leap chair’ from Steelcase was developed based on the finding of four years of research, 27 scientists, 11 studies and 732 test participants. Out of this research came important discoveries about how people sit, leading to advanced seating technology. It’s the first chair that actually changes shape to mimic and support the movement of your spine. 

Q: Going bright is the new mantra when it comes to setting up office interiors. How do you think furniture can support this endeavour? 
A: Furniture is the fundamental component of every office and they form a vital part of office décor and today’s mantra is modern. Bold and colourful furniture designs go hand in hand with modern office décor and are also are in demand due to functionality and practicality. Bright and warm welcoming colours lend a comfort factor to the office space.
 
Q: What kind of furniture is must at work spaces?
A: A coffee bar, kitchenette, or small café is a multi-faceted space: break area, meeting room, collaboration spot, mentoring space, a semi-private workspace, a place to bring a client or customer or to catch up with a colleague are things that should be kept be kept in mind apart from the quintessential work stations. What goes on here fosters company culture, collaboration, and collegiality. 

Q: Several people complain of back aches; what do you suggest to tackle this problem? 
A: People sometimes spend 14 hours or more a day sitting at work and while commuting. Sitting on an office chair for prolonged hours can lead to neck and low back pain because it increases pressure on back, neck and shoulders. To address these problems, the market has several options in terms of ergonomic seating when used properly, can help one maximise back support and maintain good posture while sitting. For optimal wellbeing, workers need to be able to move, even when seated.

Q: What do you see as far as the future trends on office designing is concerned?
A: In the past few years, the office designing industry has seen a lot of change. Work spaces are increasingly becoming multipurpose and user adjustable. Along with elegance and effective space utilisation, a lot of emphasis is also being laid on space because they play an essential role in allowing people to be more productive. Smartly designed storage places and cable channels promote freedom of movement and provide the user with a larger area to function.
