More than 25 years after his novel Kimbal Ravenswood was first published, author Madhu Rye has started work on another work of fiction, a sort of sequel to ‘Ravenswood’.

Rye, who lives in the US but is currently in Ahmedabad on a personal visit, revealed to DNA on Tuesday that the sequel will be a reverse of the earlier novel. The protagonist of the first novel is a US-based Gujarati youth who comes to India and interviews 12 girls, each born under a different zodiacal sign, to find the perfect wife. In the sequel, the tables are turned on the sexes, and it is a girl, Chandana Chakrapani, who interviews 12 boys, each born under a different zodiacal sign, to find the perfect husband.

Rye is a famous playwright and novelist in Gujarati whose works are known for their humour, sarcasm and social comment. He and his novel, Kimball Ravenswood, were recently in the news when filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar’s movie, What's your Rashee, was released for screening.

The movie, in which Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead, is based on Ravenswood but it is far more romantic than Rye’s novel.

Recalling how he got the idea for a sequel to ‘Ravenswood’, Rye said, “A girl, named Champa, who works in a store in the US came to me one day and demanded that I show her 12 boys born under different zodiacal signs so that she could choose one to marry.”
Rye said this incident was the beginning of the sequel though the female protagonist of the novel bears no resemblance to Champa of real life.

“Chandana Chakrapani does not work in a store,” said Rye. “She is a finance executive working for a firm on Wall Street.” To know more about Chandana Chakrapani, we will have to wait for Rye to complete his novel.

“I have written just the first chapter so far, though I have already introduced the character of Chandana,” Rye said. “Let’s see how the book shapes up.”
