"If I had brought joy into a couple's lives and also managed to save my family, what I have done is the right thing," says Indirani, a 26-year-old surrogate mother who lent her womb to an NRI couple.

Amid numerous debates about whether 'renting your womb' to someone was the 'right' thing, Indirani, speaking to media persons, said she will be a surrogate mother again if someone gave her the chance.

"Will these people who are debating as to whether I have done the right thing look after my family? Will they provide for me?" she asked. "I got `2 lakh from the family, I have been well looked after the last one year, and now I have given birth to two healthy babies and brought immense joy to the family. If I get another chance to bring such joy, I will definitely take it up."

According to Shrushti Charitable Trust's KT Gurumurthy, an embryologist and founder of the trust, there has been a growing demand for surrogate mothers. "NRI couples and couples from India itself come to us, looking for surrogate mothers. We provide them with women who have volunteered to be the mother after numerous counselling sessions and ensure that all the legal formalities are looked into. This way, we ensure that there are no problems once the baby is born."

He adds that adoption is a last resort for many of these couples.

"The problem with adoption is that they have to wait a number of years before they can adopt. Moreover, most couples are able to give birth, except for a problematic uterus that does not allow them to carry the baby in their womb. This is when they use a surrogate mother," he said

According to Gurumurthy, at least 75% of the women who volunteer for surrogacy services do so for monetary gains.
