It’s the same story every time police head constable Salim Mujawar plays the flute. His performances begin with curious and disbelieving glances from the audience, but in the end he
receives a standing ovation.

The applause is a result of his mastery over the instrument, but the curious glances are because Mujawar plays the flute with his nose instead of his mouth! And if you think that is bizarre, sample this — he can insert a flute in each of his nostrils and play two instruments simultaneously.

This talent, which he has nurtured for years now, stems from his desire to become a ‘Bollywood hero’.

Mujawar, 48, attached with the Khed Police Station said, “Initially, I wanted to become an actor as I am a big fan of Rajesh Khanna and wanted to follow in his footsteps. But I couldn’t do so as I joined the police force. But I never gave up on my unique talent and continued my hobby.”

The flute, though considered to be the most melodious musical instrument, is tough to play. But Mujawar can present tunes on demand. About his fascination for the flute Mujawar said, “Traditionally, the flute was commonly used as a form of communication between lovers. But in today’s era, people like to hear the flute because the melodious sound is considered a direct link between mankind and the divine.”

Mujawar can easily play popular Hindi and Marathi songs with his favourites being Meri Pyari Behniya Banegi Dulhaniya, Bombay Se Aaya Mera Dost and Marathi song Dhagala Lagli Kal.

Mujawar joined the Maharashtra police force in 1980 after passing his matriculation at Loni Kalbhor in Pune district. He hails from Vita village in Sangli district. Mujawar spoke about how he developed this unique skill. He said, “Right from my childhood I wanted to do something different. One day, while I was playing the flute at home, it suddenly occurred to me that I could also try the same with my nose. Initially, I failed but later I practiced for a couple of months and got a hang of it.”

Needless to say, playing the wind instrument with his nose takes a lot of stamina. On how he manages it, Mujawar said, “Initially it was a painful affair. But now my lungs can bear the load. I also do pranayam on a daily basis and avoid eating oily and spicy food,” he added.

Visibly pleased about the popularity his talent has received in the social circles, Mujawar said, “I have performed in many festivals like Ganeshotsav and Navratri. I have also performed for the police force. It feels nice when people are amazed about my unusual ability.”

He currently lives in government quarters on the Dehu Road with his wife and three children.

Mujawar has been with the Maharashtra police for many years. Elaborating on his experiences, he said, “My seniors always love me because of my art. Besides playing the flute, I also mimic Rajesh Khanna and call myself junior Rajesh Khanna.”
