The Wicked Witch of the West, albeit unpopular herself, probably would have never imagined that one day, far, far away, people would go crazy over her pointy shoes! Clearly they have, and how! Be it high street or the runway, pointed toes are all making a statement now and designers couldn’t be more elated about that. Both desi and international shoe designers are bringing back the 60s style with a vengeance. Think stilettos, booties, kitten heels with pointed fronts, sometimes in snazzy metallic and sometimes, muted suede.

Shoe designer Rohan Arora points out, “Pointy shoes are here to stay, the wheel of time has revolved. Recall that it was very much there during the ’70s hippie period. Old is gold, and pointed toes are coming back in a new avatar. It’s chic, has an individualistic style, and needs a lot of confidence and style to carry off. We’ve done pointed flat ballerinas and they look lovely with denims or maxi dresses.” He adds, with all earnestness, “I see them as a weapon of self-defence too.”

Designer Payal Kothari of Veruschka opines, “Pointed shoes are back this season after the round toe has enjoyed being the trend for a while now. Pointed metallic toes look super hot and feminine and I have been waiting for the trend to come in so I can include them in my next line. I think the trend has arrived at a good time, as a much-needed shift was required from the rounded toe to the pointed.”

And it’s not just the ‘Witchy’ look that they exude, as fashion designer Pria Kataria Puri tells you. “It’s a very ’60s-inspired Marilyn Monroe style. These shoes are mainly inspired by the French era. They look great if you wear them with fitted dresses like the ones Victoria Beckham does. Or, with fitted pencil skirts, bouffant dresses, French-style puffy dresses too.” Pria warns though: “Although neons are in, please do not step out wearing pointed shoes in any of those shades. Metallic would be the best bet. Also, remember that they don’t look too good with saris.”
