Unlike fashion, jewellery trends are pretty unpredictable. There might be new styles, designs, materials, stones, beads, colours, etc. inundating the jewellery market, but none of it stops you from turning to your old jewels and flaunting them off with any less flamboyance. Neither does it lessen their grandiosity!

“Jewellery is a very personal thing. It does not require any correlation with time or fashion trends. For instance, chandelier earrings that were  popular a few years back haven’t faded out. Yellow gold is now making a comeback,” says designer Neelam Soni. “A lot of my jewellery is inspired by Mughal designs. I do use rose cut diamonds, red pearls and a lot of greens,” adds Neelam, who is a fan of antique jewellery. “I have quite a few pieces, passed down to me by my mom.”

Delhi based designer Alpana Gujral, who also held a two day long exhibition (titled Shwetambari) in Mumbai last week, has also been promoting traditional
minakari work for over 25 years now. “The basis is Mughal jewellery,” she says.

“Precious jewellery is never trend driven,” contines Alpana. Her designs include light colours — sticking mainly to white and pastels. “White enamel work, Columbian work, pink tones, and a whole plethora of pearls are what I look at. Also, amethyst is something that I’m heavily playing on. The motifs are chiefly flowers, plants and animal forms, adapted to suit the modern woman.  I think jewellery is a big high for Indian girls!”  she explains.

Designer and store-owner, Varuna D’Jani feels, “Every piece of jewellery is a science in itself and every one seems to have a liking for heritage jewellery. I use precious and semi-precious stones in my designs,” she ends.
