Jewellery designer Ritika Sadhwani speaks of her love for challenges that come with customising

What inspires you when it comes to your work?
The creative spark is inherent in my nature. Consequently, any internal or external phenomenon, be it man, nature or even the abstract, has the potency to invoke that creative spirit in me. Thus, every collection of mine generates a novel and original theme. I have been inspired by nature-related concepts such as wildlife, flowers, etc and even abstract concepts such as shapes, emotions, time, etc. wherein I conduct an in-depth study of the concept on myriad levels and then, generate the designs for an entire collection. The first collection I designed (for Valentine’s Day) was inspired by love and I have used a lot of heart motifs, including the heart and arrow motif on precious metals such as gold and platinum.

Elaborate your zone of specialisation — customisation?
I design on paper and on a 3D software called CAD as per the clients requirements, tastes, desire, choice, budget, etc. First, I design a few options under the category they’re looking for, whether it is earrings, rings or bracelets. After the design has been approved, diamonds are handpicked on the basis of clarity, colour, cut and class. Next comes the manufacturing bit, which is done in my workshop under constant supervision. At each step, I monitor the making of the jewellery pieces so that it turns out better than the client ever imagined!

Is it only jewellery designing for you or have you branched out?
I’ve used diamonds on the bridges and sides of spectacles for men and woman, a diamond-studded mobile phone cover, cuff links and tie pins as well. But I’ve not yet made hair accessories as it is fine jewellery. I will probably try my hands at jewelled watches in the future.

Are diamonds and platinum meant for all occasions?
Diamonds signify beauty, purity and success. When anyone celebrates occasions like anniversaries, weddings, birthdays or a special day, they love to gift their loved ones something that is worthy of their love and commitment. Hence, people opt for diamonds. Same is the case with platinum. In fact, currently, platinum surpasses even gold in its use for special occasions, be it wedding rings, bands, neckpieces, bracelets and earrings.
