Rare books and catalogues of modern Indian artists including pages from FN Souza's personal scrapbook are up for auction.

Drawings by 26 modern artists dating as early as the 1940s as well as a selection of books and catalogues inscribed and illustrated by artists like Souza, Jehangir Sabavala, Manjit Bawa and Sakti Burman are set to go under the hammer during Saffronart 24-hour online auction today.

The auction Words and Lines features 90 lots with total lower and higher estimates of Rs 97.3 lakh and Rs 1.3 crore, said the auctioneers.

"With this series of 24-hour online auctions, we are offering collectors and the art trade a new and more a new and more frequent avenue to purchase significant lots at auction. At this auction, the wide array of drawings along with some noteworthy books will provide collectors with an opportunity to acquire quality works at attractive price estimates," says Dinesh Vazirani, CEO and co-founder Saffronart.

A set of pages from Souza's scrapbook from the 1960s offering a glimpse into the painter's life at an important juncture in the career is one of the highlight of the auction. Apart from founding the Progressive Artists Gorup Souza has also been a articulate and ingenious writer and published his book "Words and Lines" in London.

Other highlights include books, catalogues and out-of -print art publications dating from the 1950s including some of the first monographs published on Indian artists in India and abroad.

Artists featured in the auction include Nasreen Mohamedi, KK Hebbar, MF Hussain, SH Raza, Jehangir Sabavala and more while some of the prominent authors of books in the sale Edwin Mullins, Richard Bartholomew and Shiv S Kapur, Jacques Lassaigne and Geeta Kapur amongst others.

At Saffronart's first 24 hour online auction in February, several lots crossed their high estimates. Collectors would be able to bid on the auction house's website or via its proprietary Blackberry and iPhone mobile applications.
