A picture might speak a thousand words but when it comes to photographer Graciela Iturbide’s works, it speaks over a thousand emotions. The famed Mexican photographer is all set to showcase her series for Bangalore photography buffs.

Born in 1942, Graciela photographs everyday life, almost entirely

in black-and-white. She became interested in the daily life of Mexico’s indigenous cultures and is inspired by the photography of Josef Koudelka, Henri Cartier-Bresson amongst others.

Abhishek Poddar, founder of Tasveer, says, “We have titled the exhibition as The Eye of Graciela Iturbide. She is possibly one of the greatest living photographers we have today. The exhibition will feature around 50 of her works that have been handpicked by her. It has a selection of photographs that has been shot in India and Mexico.”

Considered to be one of the top photographers in the world, her works are synonymous in portraying the culture of Mexico. “I’ve been following her work for several years and happened to see her exhibition in Delhi.

It was a joint show along with lensman Raghu Rai. Awestruck by her series, I contacted the Mexican Embassy in order to bring her works to Tasveer. Happy to associate with us, she agreed for a show in the city,” informs Abhishek.

Some of the inspiration for her work came from her support of feminist causes. Her well known collection, ‘Senora de Las Iguanas’ (Our Lady of the Iguanas) was shot in Juchitán, Oaxaca, a city where women dominated town life.

Probing him about her works, Abhishek says, “She is not one of the photographers who have a photojournalist’s take. It is neither popular type nor sociological; however, her picture lures emotions and feelings to the viewers. That is what differentiates her from the rest.”

Since the prints have to go back to her, people who are interested to buy her works will be automatically directed to Graciela. “We will definitely put interested buyers on to the embassy. With so many photography enthusiasts waiting to see her work, I hope the series invokes interest,” he concludes.
