Bollywood seems to be smitten by marriages. What with real life glam couples — Imran-Avantika, Lara-Mahesh, Neelam-Samir — tying the knot, several film-makers seem to be toying with the concept of the ritual as the subject of their films. And incidentally, the idea of an arranged marriage has emerged as an exciting one.

What started as a one-off concept with What’s Your Rashee? has now caught on in a big way. And filmmakers are presenting the idea of arranged marriage with a twist. The success of recent films like Band Baajaa Baaraat and Tanu Weds Manu corroborates that very fact. Soon another marriage caper Mere Brother ki Dulhan will hit theatres.

Actress Kangna Ranaut, who starred in Tanu Weds Manu, is all for arranged marriage.

“I’m totally open to the idea. My parents have had an arranged marriage and theirs is one of the most ideal marriages I’ve ever seen. I think arranged marriages are very much a possibility for youngsters today, because if two people meet and click, it leads to a beautiful journey,” she says.

But the debate rages on. Actress Dipannita Sharma says, “Though they are still prevalent, arranged marriages are on the decline. We’re so independent minded that we don’t like the idea of meeting a guy, even if he’s the greatest guy in the world! I’ve had a love marriage. But my parents had an arranged one. It works given the expectation levels are low.”

But according to TV actress Shraddha Nigam, today’s youth would rather go for love marriages.

“Earlier, men had a mind of their own, but today women are equally independent and have a say in all matters. So it’s tough to say that arranged marriages are the order of the day. Arranged marriage is more like an alliance. But then, it really depends on the individual,” she opines. So what would you choose?
