It’s that time of the year when you pluck out those large, fancy hats and sassy dresses piled up in your wardrobe to parade wearing them and rub shoulders with society’s swish set.

Think over-sized shades, day-wear dresses, trendy hats et al. With the derby season back again in full swing, we ask fashion designers what kind of look you could flaunt and what to ditch.

Designer Pria Kataria Puri says, “Normally, whites and off-whites work well. But pastel shades such as pink, lime green and even orange look great. So, apart from dresses, you could go for formal pants with a lime green silk or cotton blouse. In terms of silhouettes, choose from knee length to floor length dresses,” Of course, hats and a pair of nice shades complete the look.

Pria insists that even though the classic black and white combo rocks, an all-black outfit spells disaster, as derby is strictly a day event. Keep the denim out if you want to make an impression, she warns.

Model and singer Manasi Scott, who also happens to be a national equestrian champ, is the most excited right now. “I just love derby, it is part of my childhood and I love dolling up for the event. Couture derby dresses will lure anybody. Well-tailored suits are in fashion too,” she says, emphasising on the fact that for derby one needs to plan what to wear.

“Look at what kind of hats are in. I love wearing hats and this is the only season when you can sport one. If you’re wearing a brightly-coloured day-wear dress, make sure your hat and shoes are in neutral shades,” Scott advises.

But Pria warns that most Indians are uncomfortable wearing hats, so the old and the shabby should be stacked away.

Designer Anita Dongre wishes hats were the order of the day in India. “Hats work well for our weather, but very few women have the elan to carry them off. Please avoid satin; instead go for chiffon, georgette, crisp linen, cotton or even jersey material. Dress smart without too much of glitz,” she suggests.

Designer Kaanch Advani agrees that one should remember to keep it low key: “Though white is a more preferred colour, even toned down fluorescent hues make for good derby ensembles.”

While dresses rule the roost, a simple chiffon sari could give them some serious competition too. But, as Pria cautions, avoid all things embroidered, beaded and sequinned if you want to be the head-turner.
