Make sure you do not miss out on the gastronomic delights that are so synonymous with Pongal, the South Indian harvest festival being celebrated today.  The city restaurants too are offering rich culinary delicacies from the Tamilian community’s kitchen.

Dakshin (ITC Maratha), is offering a traditional thali featuring Pongal specialities for you to feast on, along with the a la carte specialties for the weekend. Says Executive Chef Rajdeep Kapoor (ITC Maratha), “It’s a harvest festival and since rice and jaggery are the first crops, most of the dishes are rice/jaggery-based. The sambhar too is not of the usual sorts as we can add as many vegetables in it.” The special lunch and dinner menu includes Lemon Rasam (lentil soup flavoured with lemon), assorted Wada platter (assorted crisp patties made from lentils and vegetables), Bendakai puli kozhambu (garden fresh okra cooked in tomato and tamarind gravy), Tatta payir kai  poriyal (white kidney beans and vegetables sauted with coconut and spices), Avial (vegetables cooked in a coconut and yoghurt based gravy), Keerai kadayil (a delicate combination of lentils, spinach finished with tempering of desi ghee), Ven Pongal (slow cooked rice and lentil preparation), Sharkara Pongal (a mouth-watering combination of jaggery, coconut and rice, finished with ample dry fruits), Semiya payasam (milk pudding made from fine wheat string hoppers and raisins), Pal poli and Dal poli (whole wheat breads).

“We have a big spread of buffet for the three days of Pongal festivities for which we have especially flown down cooks from South India,” says director Dinesh Nayak of Banana Leaf.
Online food portal DeliveryChef.in are offering mini Pongal meals. “Pongal marks  new beginnings and mini Pongal meals are a good foodie way to celebrate it,” says Aditi Talreja, director of the site.
