In today's complex world, increasingly driven by commercial interests, where people are very often reduced to commodities, how important are humanitarian emotions of the heart? Emotions like kindness, consideration for others, thoughtfulness, compassion and empathy for others seem to be in demand at such times.

Says actress Mahima Chaudhary, "Even in schools, nowadays, they are teaching children the importance of Emotional Quotient. It's important to be a sensitised human being. In fact, I would rate kindness as the single most important emotion of all the humanitarian emotions. It's about being able to assess another person's need and reach out without them necessarily having to ask for assistance in words."

Fashion designer and politico Shaina NC shares her perspective on the issue, "One should be displaying such emotions but not expect them from other people, because then you're on the wrong foot. We belong to a section of society where we've been bestowed more than others and now it's our turn to help out other people."

Shaina rates forgiveness as the most important positive emotion of the heart. She says, "Often people make mistakes in life and one should forgive and forget even if one has been wronged. One has to move on with one's life rather than holding grudges."

Model Aanchal Kumar says, "I strongly believe in karma. If people expect kindness from the world then they must know how to extend it as well. I'd rather be remembered for kind deeds. Of all the heart's treasures, I'd rate compassion the highest. I'd be the happiest if I can selflessly make another person happy."

Actress Rashmi Nigam is most heartened by the fact that the world's billionaires including Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Azim Premji have donated large amounts to charitable causes in the past. "I think this highlights the existence of the highest qualities of empathy and compassion in them. I believe in the universal law — the more you give, the more you get in return. The more loving a person you are, the more love you get in return." Rashmi also feels that in the modern world people are more concerned with what they can get rather than what they can give to others.

"We live in a world where it's just 'me, me, and me' and all about ourselves. Pursuing this course obsessively leads to a dead end after a while. In the real world you have to learn how to give as much as you take. I think what's missing is unconditional love,"she concludes.
