Radeesh R, owner of Purple Turtles, an innovative lighting solutions store in Bangalore speaks on how to add light to your home in a beautiful and functional manner…

1. Lighting should always be designed while building or renovating your home so you can plan your lighting points correctly.

2. The next step is to look at functionality. Every room in the house requires different kind of lighting. A reading room should typically be a brightly-lit place while you can play around with lights in the bedroom. If you use the dining table to work or study, then ensure good lighting in that area.

3. Plan your furniture first and then choose your lighting solutions. A silk upholstered sofa goes well with classical rather than modern lighting. Once your furniture is in place, you can choose lighting based on the colour palettes.

4. Your lighting can be enhanced innovatively with the placement of interesting accessories around it. Plants make for great accessorising.

5. Over-lighting an area can look garish. The balance between light and dark adds beauty to the home. The play of shadows is very important.

6. Even apartments and flats today provide you with options to work with lights today, in terms of the number of points. However, it is not necessary to use all the points.

7. In spite of the number of innovations, tube lights still provide the best lighting solution. However, it may not go with your home design. Invest in interesting tube light covers that go with your home décor.

8. Experiment with lights. All lights are not restricted to walls and ceilings. Work with table and floor lamps for an interesting effect.

9. Both yellow light and white light works well for a home. It is more about getting used to. White lights are more functional while yellow ones are good to look at. I, however use a combination of yellow and white LED lights for my wardrobe. Work with both cool and warm lights.

10. For the living room, the best lighting solution is the tube light. Use tube lights with an appealing cover. These fit in well with both functionality and design.
