Would you really like it if your favourite star appeared on screen with his/her skin’s flaws and pores visibly magnified? Don’t think so. They wouldn’t either.

The advent of high-definition (HD) cameras, though offers you a picture resolution comparable to a 35mm movie screen, can make a pockmark on the face look like a crater. The advent of HD in films and TV received a negative response from actors in the UK some time back.

Their concern was valid. But to combat this concern, there came along a line of make-up products meant especially for the HD camera. And with the technology enticing the Indian film and TV industry now, these products have begun flooding the market here as well.

Uday Shankar, CEO of a TV channel, says, “HD significantly enhances the viewing experience — both in terms of picture quality and sound. As regular make-up then becomes a problem while viewing shows in HD, so we are working on make-up styles that can enhance the experience.”

Celebrity hair and make-up artist Sangeeta Khanna, who’s worked for the HD camera, explains, “Because of the advanced technology used, the frame is six times magnified. Traditional make-up looks cakey or powdery on HD. Therefore, you need make-up so that the skin looks natural. HD make-up is hence designed accordingly; they’re products made of superfine micro-particles. The consistency of these products is extremely fine because they are powdered by air pressure.” Most HD products, she informs, are made of rice, ground into fine particles.

Make-up artist Piyu Palkar affirms, “Regular make-up tends to look oily on HD. There are concealers and matt powders that cover pores well. There’s also derma make-up wherein the consistency is thicker than that of normal concealers.”

Products from Krylon, Sephora, Chanel, Smash Box,YSL and more are already riding high on the HD revolution. One might be worried about the effect on the skin. Are they harmful? “They make the skin look flawless and younger. They are every-day, skin-friendly products that repair the skin. They are, in fact, so light that you don’t need to apply copious amounts. Your skin is protected and moisturised at the same time. HD make-up is here to stay for sure,” says Sangeeta.
