Powerful and indispensable, fashion accessories play an unimaginably vital role in today’s world. No look is now considered complete without the right amount of accessorising.

They are the smallest and simplest additions that instantly glorify a look and personality. Accessories like jewellery, gloves, handbags, belts, shoes, hats, handkerchiefs, scarves, wigs, sunglasses, watches, stockings, hair accessories, ties, hand fans, leg warmers and leggings have been around for the longest time and have been passed down through generations, slowly evolving with time and only getting more interesting.

What was invented for merely functional, and sometimes ritualistic reasons, have eventually given way to being absolute objet du désir. They can effortlessly transform your flaws and enhance your best areas. For instance, high heel pumps add visually to the length of legs; a big chunky neckpiece can draw attention away from heavy hips and keep the focus on a slim neck. They are vital, indispensable components in completing the bigger picture. They are an effective means of expressing and asserting oneself.

Clearly accessories are no more just functional. They make statements; express your state of mind in powerful ways; sometimes even better than the clothes themselves. One instance is the embracing of the Anna caps during the Anna Hazare campaign. The Anna caps were being proudly worn by some influential fashion people at the fashion weeks. This was not only refreshing but sent out a powerful message of integrity in times of our country’s political crisis.

Fashion labels, particularly many accessory labels, have become a way of affirming a social standing in the society. Sadly, many lose their original personalities by embracing too much of the brands, when it should be the other way round.

Today’s fashion designers understand this and strive to provide their customers with the whole look. Accessories are a great way of reaching out to customers. They add a different dimension and sensibility to the brand. Considering the present generation is well travelled, well groomed, well aware of how accessories can enhance the whole look, it is rapidly becoming an utmost necessity for designers to provide their customers with the whole look. Just as in any other forms of design, accessory designing has seen a major evolution in trends and inspirations. As an accessory designer myself, I find that an accessory is a very exciting medium to tell a story or to simply channelise my creative energies.

Most accessories can never go out of fashion .They keep coming back in different interpretations and in different phases. It is true, if you want to create a new style, then you have to look at what’s been done before and learn to bring together elements from different periods or styles. As it goes, it has all been done before, you just need to open up your mind and look at things in new ways. And who knows what the next big accessories could be?

Maybe a pair of functional-decorative wings or rocket shoes! Whatever they might be, you can never have too many of them!
