From Kiss me kiss me to Beedi jailaile, you might think your kid listening to all those explicit songs with rousing lyrics is quite in fashion. But here is something that may not be so cool about it.

New research indicates that teens who prefer to listen to popular songs with degrading sexual references are more likely to engage in sexual activity.

The researchers found that compared to those with the least exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex, those with the most exposure were more than twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse.

The relationship between exposure to these explicit lyrics and sexual experience held equally for both young males and females.

DNA spoke to some people to know their opinions on this:

Hansika Motwani, teen actor
I think it totally depends on the kind of upbringing you have had and the kind of company you keep. Teens do get excited listening to such songs, but getting carried away is a personal choice totally. Nobody is forcing you to do so.

Shaan, singer
Songs have the potential to create a mood. But it's not just the music which can affect your mind but the whole ambience and atmosphere. Above all, you have to be in a certain mood to do something as per the song. For example, listening to a sad song may not necessarily make you sad if you are already in a good mood.

Sameer, lyricist
Lyrics can have a very deep impact. After watching a movie, you may forget the storyline, but you will never forget the lyrics of its songs. Lyrics do not reflect the personal state of mind of the writer but are formulated according to the need of the producers and the market. Ironically, songs with explicit lyrics somehow always become popular. So money tends to be a very important reason behind them.

Varkha Chulani, psychotherapist
There are so many romantic songs with such strong lyrics that tend to influence even adults with the emotion. So, obviously, when it comes to hearing explicit songs, they do tend to cast a spell, especially on teens who are curious to know about new things in life. It's not something that can be controlled, but teens can adhere to social lines of conduct and not get into an embarrassing situation with somebody.
