It’s not as if Indian designers haven’t showed at Milan Fashion Week, but this one is extra special for Atsu Sekhose and Alpana & Neeraj. They will be showcasing their creations amongst the world’s best known names at Milan Fashion Week beginning September 23.

The icing on the cake is that the designers will not have to spend anything from their pockets for the chance because the costs — which can go over Rs 50 lakh — will be borne by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, which hosts Milano Moda Donna, the Milan Fashion Week.

What worked against Mumbai designers is the fact that the selection was made from amongst participating designers of Delhi Fashion Week, in accordance to an MoU  signed between the Fashion Foundation of India (FFII) and Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. There was only one Mumbai based designer (Savio Jon) on the roster this year, and he didn’t make the cut. For the record, only two other Indian designers have showed at Milan Fashion week before this — Manish Arora and Narendra Kumar. While the playing field may have been skewed to favour Delhi, it’s hardly dampening the celebrations of the selected designers.

Says Alpana Chauhan, 29, who along with husband Neeraj runs the label Azara, “What an excellent opportunity! Milan is one of the major world fashion destinations and is the best openings we could have got to represent Indian Fashion internationally.”

Gushes a thrilled Atsu, who will be showing his pret line, “I am extremely happy to have been selected to show in Milan at this stage of my career with Prada, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Gucci...Milan is a fashion Mecca.”
