One never really knows what life has in store. After graduating in Botany and Biochemistry, Anjana Sharma, currently, director fashion at IMG Reliance, had little idea what the coming years would hold for her. At present, she, with her 20 years of experience in advertising, entertainment and fashion, is spearheading one of India’s premier fashion events, Lakmé Fashion Week.

She prefers to call herself ‘a creature of routine and habit’. But that doesn’t stop Anjana from exploring the world. “I have promised myself to visit a new place every year. I visited Berlin on work a few months back but was amazed with the cosmopolitan and culture heavy city. Also, I have a deep-seated desire to visit Ibiza before I turn 50. The Galapago Islands — a bundle of contradictions is also on my wish list. In India, Pondicherry, Hampi and Goa remain all-time favourites,” states Anjana.

The self-proclaimed foodie, who loves rustling up dishes for friends and family, says, “I’m more a brunch person since I don’t prefer late nights. I like experimenting with food and enjoy raw meat. I had a lot of that when in Berlin. In fact, I want to go to Japan some day for a few specialised classes in sushi making.” She adds, “But I must say, there’s nothing like ghar ka khana — rice, yellow dal, bhindi fry, fried fish, with lots of pickle and onions. When I have friends over, I generally prepare my signature mutton curry that’s quite a hit. Italian dishes are something that I love eating and feeding to people, too.”

Music is a passion for Anjana. “I’m a Blues fan and I think old Hindi film music falls under this category. But I also love listening to Rihanna, Adele, Bob Dylan,” she says. Another sure shot way of distressing for her is doing yoga. “That’s the only way I can keep my sanity intact,” she quips, adding, “I try to make it a part of daily routine but I’m a mere human being and there are slips.”

She doesn’t much care for films though if they mean late night shows. “I’m pretty low on patience — five to seven minutes and that’s it for me,” she confesses.

Having studied science and moving to advertising and fashion, Anjana doesn’t see it as a huge shift. “In a way it’s an extension — like nurturing talent. One just needs to be observant,” she explains. Having been an integral part of the fashion world — business wise and creatively, the lady feels it’s important to be able to stand out. “I really enjoy how Lady Gaga presents herself. For that matter, even Wendell Rodericks brings out the best in you. It’s important to be able to have fun with fashion rather than get dictated by trends,” she signs off.
