If there is one way one can change the way a home looks, it is with the interiors. It is not always feasible to refurnish your home but it is definitely easy to bring new ornaments or even work with old stuff to give your home an interesting makeover.

Anything from the coasters on your table and cushion covers to interestingly designed lamps, curtains, bolsters and even fridge magnets can make the cut.

Brimming with ideas is Gunjan K Shahbadi, co-owner of The Orange Bicycle, who says, “There are plenty of options today. There is a wide range of things one could use to make their home look quirky. Using a coaster that looks like a manhole to making your colourful watering can, a flower pot can add a quirky touch to your home. Bizarre Hollywood and Bollywood themes on lamps, cushions and table mats can also make your interiors look interesting.”

If budgets are an issue, don’t worry. You need not hit the stores to give your home a new look. All you need to do is work with the waste at home — pick stuff from your attic if required, and your home can start looking different.

Pull out your mother or grandmother’s old silk saris and weave them into new patterns as curtains, tablemats or sofa and cushion covers. You could even just wrap it around old lamps to give the room a new shade.

Nihar Mehta, owner of Tribal Route, says, “Old denims could be split into two and used as bolster covers to make your divan look funky.”

Using different themes periodically could be an interesting way to change the way your home looks. A vintage theme could probably include an old metal trunk painted colourfully and propped in the corner of your living room, serving as a table to place your telephone.

You could use a decoupage of newspapers or magazine covers and laminate them to make retro coasters. Old posters with funny lines could adorn your wall making people giggle when they look around your home.

Recycling things at home is the best way to change the way your home looks. It is reasonable and has complete utility value. Painting halved plastic bottles to turn them into colourful low voltage lamps is innovative and very wild.

Ankita Sarangi, owner of Chilli Billi — an avant garage studio, says, “Adding funk to your home is all about personalising it. You bring in the quirkiness with your moods and taste.” Tiny things like funny travel magnets that speak about a country’s culture could make your fridge seem like a representative of a globetrotter; while colourful shells of different shapes could add a Mediterranean spark to your den.

With your varying moods, a mundane home is surely boring. Make it quirky to suit your theme for the season and find your home looking all new and renovated.
