An unique art form
From making movies to creative writing and now painting in a unique medium, artist Simran KS Lamba has done it all. His art show titled Genesis, which is currently being showcased in the city, works with the challenging medium of coal tar and other industrial materials, which include bolts, nails, sand, and glass among other things.

“It took me four years to put together 35 pieces of artwork, in a medium that is extremely challenging and takes intense work to put together,” he offers.

Simran, who is probably the only one in the country to be working with coal art to create beautiful pieces of art, says he draws his inspiration from visuals, landscapes and elements that appeal to his senses.

Simran’s crayon sketches as a child were selected by UNESCO’s greeting cards, which he says became the starting point of his interest and love for art.

In Genesis, the artist explores various subjects in each work of art, with the unifying medium being coal tar. With someone, who has worked on other creative forums, what led him to choose coal tar as the medium of his expression, we ask?

“There was a time, when my house was being redone and I saw this boiling tar in one corner. It fascinated me and I wanted to use it as an artists’ medium,” he says, adding that though the medium involves risks like burning, the end product brings him so much creative satisfaction that he is already planning his next step with the same in mind.
