The Oscars, The Budget and Me!, writes Priyanka Chaturvedi

Two big ticket events happened back to back on the same leap day of this leap year. India’s eyes were focused on both. In my fellow columnist Sajid Khan’s style, ‘Nahin samjhe? Samjhati hoon, Samjhati hoon.’ One was the Oscars night; the second to follow soon after was the Union Budget.

For me, the only connect to Oscars in this lifetime will be whenever my namesake Priyanka Chopra rocks the red carpet! This time, thanks to our similar Twitter handles I got tagged in some of the compliments she received. I am not complaining one bit! Reflected glory and all that ,as the saying goes...
Every year, for me, Oscars is all about the gorgeous gowns and jewellery, very shallow? No! Rather an honest confession. I am certain many would agree that they tune in to watch the award ceremony to catch up on the fashion trends. But how I wish there was more colour on the red carpet! And no I am not talking about the entire controversy around the Oscars, which was revealing as to how our minds are still to overcome the differences in our head on the basis of the colour of one’s skin.
I totally loved what Priyanka Chopra was wearing, but am I the only one who found it disappointing that she went with the usual tried, tested white colour? And yes, a big boo to all those who sniggered at her for not choosing ethnic Indian wear or an Indian designer. Those cribbing reminded me of the unnecessary criticism that Coldplay’s video for Hymn For The Weekend got. Let me say this, even if I am in the minority of one, I loved all the Indian sights, sounds and colours in the video. Too bad if you didn’t! Anyway, back to the red carpet fashion! Many women totally rocked in some brightly coloured gowns like Brie Larson, Tina Fey, Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron. Did anyone notice the discreet jewelry sported by all? I found it just so classy.
However the Oscars isn’t all about fashion and accessorising like I am making it sound! It was great to see some real issues being taken up at the event. Leonardo Di Caprio who finally broke the Oscar jinx spoke passionately about climate change, Lady Gaga on sexual abuse and assault and Chris Rock, of course, on the controversy on racial representation that overshadowed the Academy awards.
Now, for the dampener? The Union Budget that followed right after the Oscars, well there is nothing much to say except that we are now living in expensive times aka acche din. The only relief for us, the taxpayers is that we aren’t being taxed for the air we breathe…yet. Besides all the designer gowns that I was appreciating at the beginning of the column have been made more unaffordable than they already were thanks to more charges and duties applicable post the budget. Thankfully, the dream of owning a designer gown is not a taxable offence! Like Aerosmith’s song…. Dream On!
