It’s been a major transformation for the modern Indian man, where he has come a long way from looking like Chewbacca’s cousin to a more groomed version that maintains the status quo —some fuzz without the fuss. In fact, a new men’s health survey revealed that more than 48 per cent of men shave or trim their leg hair, a trend that around 22 per cent of women are on board with.  Read on to find out more.

About the study
Men’s Health surveyed their Facebook followers after noticing that more and more male gym-goers appeared to shaving the fuzz, which led them to investigate if it was a growing trend. The findings took them by surprise as they revealed some surprising stats. An unprecedented 33.1 per cent admitted to using a trimmer to ‘cut it down’ while a further 15.3 per cent said they shaved their legs ‘frequently’ and did not find it weird. Meanwhile, just over half (51.6 per cent) insisted they would ‘never’ touch their leg hair. Women’s Health, joined in with their own survey, only to reveal that 30 per cent of women were partial to ‘a man who trims leg hair down’ while almost a quarter (22 per cent) ‘love’ a man with clean-shaven legs. While swimmers and people belonging to the glamour world are known to shave off the fuzz, the trend is also catching on with the common man, who has gone on board with the idea for aesthetic reasons. We spoke to women back home to find out how they feel about sharing that razor with the men.

SHAVE IT OFF

Indian men have definitely started shaving their legs. I have seen many of them rock shorts at the gym with shaved legs or even when they step out for a casual outing.  I think underarms are a major problem area. After all no one wants to smell your presence before they even see you. Chest hair playing peek-a-boo from an open shirt or V-neck is again a big turn off.  Scruffy beards just make you look sick or look like a serial killer.

I agree with the study, in fact many men that I know have gone a step further and also trimmed the hair in the groin area. It makes them feel more hygienic, and even the women in their lives are okay with it. While hairy legs is not a big deal, there are some problem areas that men need to take care of like underarms, some of them are ugly.  My brother uses a hair removal cream to get rid of hair on his back. That’s an option if you have a lot of hair in that area. And as I mentioned before, trimming hair in the groin area should also be part of men’s grooming routine.

I work in the entertainment industry and about 90 per cent of the men that I interact with do shave their legs.  However, personally I like men who sport a fuzz, but there are certain parts that definitely need to be maintained like arm pits and the groin area, which needs to be trimmed regularly.

I think a stubble is always sexy on men, but a hairy beard is just scary. While hair on the legs is still okay. hairy ears, arm pits and grizzly long facial hair need to be maintained.
