Bandra’s new Irani cafe pays homage to a dying legacy. With all its quirks on display SodaBottleOpenerwala proudly claims its space in the city’s growing culinary arena.

From the decor to the list of don’ts that adorn the wall that spell what’s permissible and what’s not — it will make you chuckle and transport you to a world and time when we really did not give a damn. It makes you crave for that dying culture of what was Bombay where you could speak your mind without always being so politically correct.

While the ambience of this new Irani cafe hits all the right notes, the food is not far behind. We recommend you try the crispy boneless fried chicken aka Chicken Farcha (`295) that’s cooked and seasoned to perfection served with a green chutney on the side. Their take on the ever popular Berry Pulao was spot on. We loved the tangy, sweet take on this dish that had our tastebuds singing with joy. Pair that with the fiery Goan Sausage (`425) served with buttered pav and you are good to go.

The Raspberry Soda (`195) (a version of the popular Parsi beverage) was a bit too tangy for us, while the Sekanjebin (`165) a Persian-inspired drink made from dried plums, mint and jaggery was strictly okay. The desserts sadly did not meet the expectations raised by the Farcha. Our Toblerone Mousse (`195) was thick and grainy instead of light and airy, while the Lagan Nu Custard (`175)  did manage to lift our spirits a bit. Overall, SodaBottleOpenerwala is definitely worth a visit.

It’s quirky interpretation of both the food and the mannerisms at the much-loved Irani cafes has successfully been translated in the ambience with a few hits and some minuses in the food. We will be back for more!
