A commerce graduate, a chartered accountant and chairman of a company, Kunj Trivedi is a wildlife enthusiast at heart.

For the first time ever he is showcasing years of his works at his debut exhibition taking place at the Jehangir Art Gallery. Since the early 1990s he has roamed forests all over the world from America to Africa, Artic and Asia.

The cat family, especially the Indian Tiger, is among his favourite animals. “You have to be at the right time at the right place to capture the perfect moment with animals,” he says.

According to him the best time to spot tigers is during the summers. “Tigers have less movement in the territory during the summers. So it’s very easy to spot them. Also it’s good to track them on an elephant. You get better pictures because the elephant can go wherever the tiger is going. It’s safe too because the tigers don’t attack a big animal like an elephant. Travelling in the jeep is not such a good option because the vehicle has limited mobility,” says Kunj.

Spotting a tiger or a big cat with cubs is another thing which makes it easier for the photographer to click pictures of the animal. “Cubs keep the mother busy. So while she is occupied you can take pictures and make simple moments seem fabulous with your camera. I always try to get tigers or other cats with cubs around them,” he says.

Kunj has observed a striking similarity between the African and the Indian wild dogs. “Both are very similar in nature and hunt in packs. Their running ability is so strong that even if the prey is running faster than them, sooner of later it is likely to exhaust and give up. And when it does, within seconds the dogs finish up its entire body,” he says. After tigers, wild dogs are Kunj’s favourite.

He advises people not to be stupid when they go in the wild. “Animals look harmless from a car or jeep. But you must learn to respect their territory or they can seriously harm you,” he says. Though, he believes that it’s difficult to make a living out of wild life photography. “There are thousands of pictures of wild animals already available in the market. Its better if you pursue it as a hobby,” he concludes.

Kunj Trivedi’s exhibition of wild animals is taking place at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda.
