Relief at last! 27K panchayat assistants get extension

There is a good news for 27,000 panchayat assistants as they are set to get extension for another year. Last year, the state government had recruited them for just one year. 

After the end of term, these panchayat assistants would have rendered jobless. However, the government has decided to extend their tenure for one more year.

That’s not all. The government has also resolved problem of their honorarium. Earlier, the money used to be sent into accounts of panchayats from SSC state grant fund, however, now it would be sent directly to the education department. 

The government will soon issue an order to this effect. 

Tussle between department:

First, it was selection process then going against guidelines they were arbitrarily posted under panchayati elementary education officers (PEEO). Panchayati raj department’s guidelines clearly mentioned that they would work unde. It was clear that panchayat assistants would work under sarpanchs and follow their orders. The gram panchayat assistants were supposed to inform villagers about various schemes.However, the primary education department has issued contrary orders in which it  asked gram panchayat assistants to mark their presence under PEEO. Accordingly many zila parishads, CEOs issued order to relieve panchayat assistants from panchayat and asked them to give mark attendance under PEEO. While, they were working under PEEO in the education department; their salaries were paid by panchayati raj department. 

Vacant posts:

Only 70% posts have been filled while remaining 30% are yet to be filled. The recruitment process is underway even after a year. Non-payment of salaries— Around 6,000 to 7,000 panchayat assistants have not received salary even once while some have been paid for just two to four months’ salary. “The government has resolved problem of salary, which was a big headache. I received salary only once so far. WE demand that the government give us permanent appointment as soon as possible,” Ashok Sihag, state convener, Vidyarthi Mitra Shikshak Sangh.

DISPUTE RESOLVED

The dispute between the two departments has been resolved Panchayat assistants had received appointment on May 18, 2017. Their one year term would complete on May 17, 2018.
