Comptroller and Auditor General of India and former IAS officer of Rajastahn Cadre Rajiv Mehrishi set up an example for the bureaucracy when on Thursday he emptied a toilet pit from a twin pit toilet in rural Maharashtra. In this tasks he was joined by secretary in the ministry of drinking water and sanitation Parameswaran Iyer.

The pit-cleaning exercise was conducted at Pandharewadi gram panchayat in Daund block of the Pune district. The exercise was basically a step towards dispelling myths, biases and stigmas and setting a precedent that officers who advocate for sanitation and hygiene should practice the same. Several state principal secretaries (sanitation), senior officers of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), and senior officers of Maharashtra government joined in this exercise.

At the #ODF Sustainability workshop in #Maharashtra, Additional Chief Secretaries of various states, senior officers of the #SBM & state government officials emptied the pits from twin pit toilets to de-stigmatize emptying of the #compost by the household,” says ‘Swachh Bharat’ on its twitter handle sharing a picture of the CAG Mehershi. The CAG is seen in yellow t-shirt and climbing down in a pit to empty it.

The twin-pit toilet is the safest toilet technology said to suit rural India. The rural households, though, hesitate in building this low-cost technology due to stigma associated with emptying the pit. While the truth is different. A pit in twin-pit toilet model fills up in 5 years and the waste can be easily re-directed to the second pit, and it becomes safe-to-handle compost in 6 months to 1 year. It is also ideal for use in agriculture. The officers including CAD present on this occasion held up the compost in their hands. And they also took compost to their homes after the event got over.
