Chief minister Narendra Modi, while answering the questions put by the SIT in March 2010, said that Zakia Jafri had levelled wild allegations against him.

“The complainant is levelling wild allegations of criminal conspiracy and subversion of rule of law which is nothing, but vexatious allegations having no bases. I have been lawfully functioning as a CM and carried out my responsibilities for the safety, security and development of the people of Gujarat,” Modi told SIT in his answer.

Modi was blamed for his alleged decision to bring the dead bodies of Karsevaks from Godhra to Ahmedabad. To a question by SIT on this, Modi replied: “In the meeting held at the collectorate in Godhra, a collective decision was taken in consultation with all those present there to transport the dead bodies to Ahmedabad in light of the fact that most of the victims belonged to Ahmedabad and nearby places.”

Modi straight denied the allegations that parliamentarian Ahsan Jafri had called him for help before he was killed in Gulbarg Society massacre. Modi said, “I had not known late Ahsan Jafri, former MP, as he was elected as an MP sometime in 1970s when I was not even in politics. I would like to add here that no such phone call had been received by me.”

Modi vehemently rejected the claim of suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who had said that Modi instructed the police force to let Hindus vent their anger, during the meeting of top police officials at the CM bungalow on the night of February 27, 2002.

Modi stated before SIT that Bhatt, then a deputy commissioner with State Intelligence, and GC Raigar, chief of State Intelligence, were not present in the meeting. “I issued instructions to them to take all possible steps to maintain law and order and peace,” Modi told SIT.

On the report of RB Sreekumar, who succeeded Raigar as State Intelligence chief, about communal situation in Gujarat, Modi replied that such letter was never put before him.

“It may have been mentioned that during March-April 2002, elections were held in 1,700 panchayats of state peacefully, around 6,000 Haj pilgrims who were welcomed at their respective places, various examinations were held peacefully, etc. In view of this, the claim of Sreekumar that the Muslims lost faith in the administration, police and judiciary does not seem to be sound,” Modi said.
