In a splendid articulation of their artistic skills, a group of artists from Odisha presented a show on the theme of 'Year of Youth Power' at Gandhinagar on Sunday night to mark the celebration of Utkal Divas, the foundation day of Odisha state. Odisha celebrates its foundation day on April 1.

The theme this year was adopted in an attempt to further strengthen the socio-cultural bonding between Odisha and Gujarat, especially in view of the fact that the Gujarat government has announced 2012 as the 'Year of Youth Power' to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

An event was organized by the Gandhinagar Odiya Samaj on Sunday to mark the occasion. The celebration revolved around the theme of cultural and community integration between the two states — Odisha and Gujarat — which have a lot of similarities in terms of language, history and marine resources. Many Odiyas who have made Gujarat their home are contributing to its societal changes through their field of expertise.

The mesmerizing cultural programme included presentation not only by invited artists, but also by local Odiya children on a variety of topics ranging from Odishi dance to events on Gujarati culture.

Chief guest at the event, state health and tourism minister Jay Narayan Vyas touching upon the commonalities between the two states said, "While Odisha has a Konark temple, Gujarat has its Modhera; Odiyas take out Jagannath rathyatra in Puri while Gujaratis too take out theirs in Ahmedabad; and above all both are maritime states."

Speaking on the significance of Odisha as a state, PS (Narmada and Water Resources) HK Dash highlighted how the state was created by the relentless efforts of many Odiya leaders 76 years ago, but lamented that Odisha is yet to gain an economic identity in the country.

Other bureaucrats present on the occasion included Maheswar Sahu, GC Murmu and PN Roy Chowdhury.
