A superintendent of police and two other cops were today suspended and a magisterial probe ordered into an incident in which a youth was killed allegedly in police firing leading to ransacking of a police station by a group of angry locals.

Superintendent of police (rural) KK Asthana, circle officer Rajpal Singh and station house officer of Simbhaoli police station KPS Chahal were suspended for dereliction of duty, police sources said.

The suspension came after the locals protesting the firing yesterday attacked Shimbhaoli police station and set on fire eight vehicles in Garsmukteshwar last night.

They alleged that the youth died in the firing by security personnel who were allegedly conducting raids to nab some wanted criminals suspected to be hiding in the village.

"Police got information of some local criminals hiding in a jungle of village Batt. The police surrounded the area and asked them to surrender but they started firing at the security personnel," SSP Akhil Kumar said, adding police returned the fire.

In the exchange of fire, Parvez, 28, was shot and he was admitted to a hospital where he was declared dead, Kumar said.

Protesting against the incident, the locals attacked the police station and blocked vehicular movement on National Highway 24 last night, police said. According to the police, Deputy SP Sheel Kumar and 12 other policemen were manhandled and injured in the attack.

The situation was brought under control after senior police officials reached the spot and additional security personnel were called in from nearby police stations around midnight.

District magistrate R Rameshkumar also visited the spot and ordered a magisterial probe into the incident, they said, adding, no arrested has been made in connection with the violence.
