As the polls draw close, political differences of an intriguing kind are emerging in the Congress party in Gujarat. Following Rahul Gandhi's support to farmers opposing construction of a cement plant on a village's water body in Mahuva, Bhavnagar, Youth Congress (YC) has now turned it into a political issue to contest the upcoming corporation and local body elections.

The curious part is the parent body Congress in Gujarat is not interested in lending its support to make it a poll issue.

Reasons are aplenty, beginning with strategic intimacy of senior leaders with corporate houses, internal differences amongst Congress leaders of the region and lately, the fact that Rahul reached out to Mahuva's BJP MLA, Kanubhai Kalsariya, spearheading the movement, without any solicitation or consultation whatsoever, with senior leaders of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC).

It may be recalled that earlier this month, Rahul extended his support to the issue following his visit to IRMA, Anand. A few days later, Kalsariya shared the dais with YC leaders under the banner of an environment seminar. YC Gujarat president, Indravijaysinh Gohil said that, they have a blueprint ready to politically support Mahuva farmers and all other such families affected whose farmland has been forcefully grabbed for industrialization.

"A mass rally and public gathering has been organized in Mahuva on September 5. Other places like Veraval, Talaja, Mundra, Mithi Virdi and Dholera have similar issues. We will take up the issue of how CM Narendra Modi is sold out to industrial houses and how he is ruining the livelihood of ordinary citizens in the blind race for 'development'," Gohil said.

However, senior leaders in Congress requesting anonymity brushed off the issue. "Everyone knows that Modi is sold out to industrial houses, and hence, there is nothing new to it. Congress supports these affected families, but we are not going to turn this into a poll issue.

Law and order concerns, extortion racket of Amit Shah are the bigger issues this time, to deal with" he said.
