For those who are seeking help for the conservation of their heritage property here is some good news. The Ahmedabad Heritage Foundation (AHF) has come up with a team of architects who are studying four heritage properties located within the wall city.

What is remarkable about the project is that these architects will be rendering their services free. The idea of this exercise is to conserve the heritage through practical solutions.

AHF, a joint effort of Gujarat Institute of Housing and Estate Developers and Heritage cell of Ahmedabad Municipal corporation (AMC), has managed to gather six city-based architects who will begin to study the property from next week.

The architects will visit the pols located in Gheekanta area in the walled city and interview the respective property owners to understand their problems.

Rajiv Patel, an active member of AHF, said: "We feel proud that these young breed of architects are ready to spare their valuable time and support the cause."

"We are in the process of  roping in other architects too because this will create a mass movement in itself and many heritage properties can then be restructured fast," added Patel.

The team of architects who are working on this pilot project will also try to create a formula in which the property that needs to be checked satisfies the criteria, then work can be started immediately. Bimal Mistry, a city-based architect who is also the joint secretary of the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), Ahmedabad, is one of the team members who is active in the cause. He said, "There are around 3,000 heritage properties that need immediate conservation. There are many who go for restructuring themselves, but lack of techniques by inexperienced constructors can harm the original structure."

Mistry added that in future IIID can also get involved big time with AHF. Currently, IIID has 230 members including architects, designers and students from the same fraternity.
