A magistrate today granted bail to the yesteryear actor Sadhana who appeared before the court in a defamation case filed against her by builder Yusuf Lakdawala.

The magistrate at Bandra court granted the actor bail of Rs 5000 with surety or cash of same amount. The court had issued process against Sadhana who had made allegations in a section of the media that the builder had issued death threats to her to vacate her 3,000 sq ft suburban Santacruz residence.

The 68-year-old actress, known for lead roles in films like Mera Saya and Woh Kaun Thi, resides since many years on the ground floor of the two-storeyed Sangeeta bungalow owned by singer Asha Bhosle, while the accused Yusuf Lakdawala stays on the second floor, police said.

Actress Baby Naaz lives on the first floor, police said adding all the three are tenants. Sadhana had in August last year lodged a complaint with Santacruz police accusing Lakdawala of issuing death threats and trying to force her to vacate her house in Santacruz. Sadhana had alleged that Lakdawala wanted to redevelop the property for which he has been terrorising her and asking her to leave the ground floor residence, police said.

Following the complaint lodged by Sadhana, Lakdawala was arrested in November 2010 and let off on bail after a day. Lakdawala then approached the Bandra Magistrate claiming that he had been falsely implicated and defamed by Sadhana as he had never threatened the actress, the builder's lawyer A R Pargaonkar told PTI.

The magistrate had asked the police to probe the allegations and submit a report, the lawyer said. After verifying mobile phone data and tracing location of both Sadhana and Lakdawala's phones, police submitted a report stating that the complaint filed by the actress appeared to be false, the lawyer said.

The court had earlier observed that prima facie a case of defamation had been made out against Sadhana and summoned her to appear before it. As she appeared before the court today, she was granted bail, Pargaonkar said.
