Yanam violence: 5 arrested by Puducherry police

Two senior IPS officers were supervising the situation and normalcy had been restored in the town, the DIG said.

Puducherry police on Wednesday arrested five persons in connection with the recent violence at Yanam town, which had led to killing of a senior executive of Regency Ceramics, and caused huge damage to the company's plant there.

"We have arrested five persons who are suspected to be involved in the recent violence. We will have to nab some more persons. Special teams have been formed to catch them," said ID Sukla, DIG, Puducherry.

Two companies of the state police were camping in the town at present, he said.

Two senior IPS officers were supervising the situation and normalcy had been restored in the town, the DIG added.

"We have so far registered four cases with regard to all the incidents, including an attack on our own personnel," he said.

On January 27, a union leader died in hospital, following his detention by police for violating prohibitory orders. This led to attack by enraged factory workers on the factory.
