Expelled Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh remains defiant over his former party chief’s demand for his resignation from Rajya Sabha membership. On Thursday, the high-profile leader continued to attack the party, claiming he was used as a “dustbin” for 14 years and was now being called “garbage” by party leaders.
Amar Singh reacted sharply to SP general secretary and Mulayam’s cousin Ramgopal Yadav equating him with garbage.

In a strong rebuttal, Singh said, “If he thinks I am garbage, what does he think of Mulayam Singh who kept this garbage close to his heart for 14 years. Does he think of Mulayam Singh also as garbage?”

“My expulsion from SP is culmination of my journey of 14 years from being the party’s dustbin to becoming its garbage. I have been squarely blamed for all decisions taken by the party that backfired, including the SP chief’s decision to join ranks with Kalyan Singh,” Amar Singh said.

He said his relations with the SP chief were based on “trust, confidence and mutual respect” and maintained that Mulayam was “misled” into sacking him.

Flanked by close associate Jaya Prada, who was also expelled from the party for supporting him, the disgruntled leader said, “In January, Mulayam Singhji spoke to me over phone and wished me good health. He also asked me if I was joining any party or floating my own outfit, which I denied. I then told him that I owed him two things — membership of the Rajya Sabha and the post of parliamentary standing committee chairman — and asked him to free me of the responsibilities.”

According to Singh, Mulayam told him that he had been duly elected to the Rajya Sabha and the chairmanship of the committee had been conferred on him by parliament.

“So, he said I should continue in  both,” Singh said.

As such, he added, he continues to be an MP despite being expelled from the party because of the SP chief’s nod.
