The writing on the wall does not seem to be auguring too well for the BJP. Gujarat governor Kamala Beniwal has taken serious note of BJP's posters and graffiti in various cities of Gujarat, which claim that the Congress is politically manoeuvering the arrest of Gujarat's IPS officers and is supporting terrorists.

On Saturday, state Congress general secretary Nishith Vyas gave an application to Gandhinagar DSP Piyush Patel to investigate who put up such inflammatory posters and hoardings, find out their source of funds and take action against the guilty.

District Superintendent of Police, Gandhinagar district, Piyush Patel confirmed that an application related to the objectionable graffiti has been received and the investigation handed over to a deputy superintendent of police.

Earlier, according to reliable sources, the governor on Friday evening, took to task senior bureaucrats of the home department and director general of police SS Khandwawala, and asked them to ensure that all the posters and graffiti are removed at the earliest.

"The posters and graffiti are communally instigating and disturb the peace of the city. We have been informed that she has categorically sought their removal and warned against political campaigning on such communal lines," city Congress president Pankaj Shah said.

Last week, BJP kicked off what it called its campaign for the upcoming local body elections raising the issues of arrested cop Abhay Chudasama, medico Ketan Desai and businessman Rajesh Adani. Posters and graffiti with slogans like 'Afzal-Kasab ne Biriyani, police adhikari ne pareshani' (It's Biriyani for Afzal-Kasab, and trouble for police inspectors)   and 'Congress ni chhe maili chaal, CBI dwaara kare Gujarat ne behaal' (Congress is conspiring against Gujarat with the help of the CBI) were put up in major cities of the state.

BJP spokesperson Vijay Rupani had confirmed that this would be their election agenda for the coming elections. Earlier this week, riots broke out in Shahpur and Dariapur areas of Ahmedabad. The instigation is unclear. Congress claimed the riots were prompted by BJP to create a communal fervour ahead of the elections.

The BJP for now seems to be toning down its rhetoric. On Saturday evening, Rupani said, "We want to create public opinion on the issue and take it ahead when we find necessary."

The opposition party has decided to register a police complaint at every place where such posters and graffiti have been put up.
