Celebrated each year on November 10 by the UNESCO, World Science Day provides an opportunity to highlight the contribution science makes to achieving sustainable development, and enhancing the prospects for peace.

A workshop was organised, as part of the celebrations, for school principals and science teachers, in the afternoon. Dilip Gadhavi, executive director of Science City, said in his inaugural speech that Science City is UNESCO's partner in India, to celebrate World Science Day.

Professor Abhijit Sen from Institute of Plasma Research explained the difference between basic and applied science. He explained that basic science is useful to explore discoveries, spin-offs and in education, whereas applied science leads to industrialisation and wealth creation.

He concluded by urging policy-makers to develop 'knowledge capital' which will create scientifically creative manpower.

"There should be significant effort towards linkages between the basic centre of research (education) and the centre of applied research (industries). We must also allow free flow of ideas and encourage industries to invest in
research," said Sen.

Dr RP Dubey, deputy director of the Space Application Centre (SAC) of ISRO, explained the usage of space application in day-to-day life, in his lecture. He also spoke on various current and future projects.
