A 23-year-old man working at the Torrent Power House's C-station died after he accidentally slipped into an equipment called ESP.

The youth was cleaning some of the machines when he slipped in and the ash in the machine suffocated him to death.

Rajeshwar R Adidravid, a resident of Natha Rabari ni Chali, in Dharmnagar was the eldest son of a poor household. According to sub inspector JH Makwana, who is investigating the case, Rejeshwar slipped while cleaning the equipment at the C-station of Torrent Power House.

What followed was a spat between the residents of the chali and company officials over compensation.

Incidentally the argument took place on the cremation ground and went on for more than six hours on Sunday.

How it happened
According to eye witnesses Rajeshwar fell inside the equipment which is a labyrinth of partitions. A fellow worker who saw him fall said, "Two men were holding a water pipe when a heap of ashes fell near him from the upper storey. Suddenly, he slipped and tumbled inside the equipment which is 30 to 40 ft deep. He got stuck inside the thing that has various partitions of metal sheets."

The worker said that Rajeshwar screamed for help but there was no equipment or safety tools to extract him. "We somehow managed to cut open the equipment and extract him," he said.

The worker said that the equipment had not been used for a long time and they were cleaning ashes from it, he added.

Ashes caused the death
The family and fellow workers claimed that Rajeshwar died on the spot while company officials claimed that he died in civil hospital.

Sub inspector Makwana said that the worker died an hour after he was admitted to the hospital's ICU ward.

"The incident happened in Torrent Power House's C-station. The post mortem report said that Rajeshwar died due to the ashes which had filled the equipment. He could not breathe due to the ashes. The report says  his intestines were full of ashes," Makwana said.

Crisis in the family
The news was a big blow to this Adidravid family who had recently come out of grief following the mysterious death of their daughter at her husband's house in Chennai. Rajeshwar was the eldest son and had been working at the factory as a contract labourer.

He had been one of the primary breadwinners for the family. His brother is a student while his father Rammanikam is a daily worker.

Unseemly quarrel
If the tragedy wasn't enough, relatives and company officials were squabbling for over six hours to determine the compensation. Incidentally, all this squabbling took place on the cremation ground.

A close relative of the victim allegedly said that company officials wanted to wrap up the case by paying a compensation of Rs3 lakh to the victim's family.

"But the family wanted Rs5 lakh and pension and a permanent job for one of the victim's brothers," said the relative. "These company officials do not know how much he contributed to the household finance. It is a shame that the officials have pegged the value of a young man's life at Rs3 lakh," said the relative.

"Our demand may look awkward but at the end it is the family that has lost an earning member. The company can always find another worker. So it is fair that the family is given a better compensation," said a relative of the victim.

Company officials, meanwhile, left the scene and promised to do justice and look into the demand on Monday.
